Design Lab

Where ideas become buildable.

Superfluoro Circle
  • Not every architectural idea arrives with its physical answer already resolved.

A material may behave differently than expected. A detail may require testing. An interface may need development. A new product or system may begin with a question rather than a specification.

Superfluoro Design Lab is where we investigate those questions.

  • Working with architects, designers, manufacturers and specialist collaborators, we explore the materials, details and physical relationships that sit between an idea and its realisation.

Some investigations solve a particular project.

Others create knowledge, products or systems that can be used again.

  • Collaboration

    Developing ideas together.

Design Lab provides a place to work with architects and designers on ideas that require further physical development.

That may mean investigating a material, resolving an unusual detail, testing a manufacturing approach or developing a new architectural solution.

The objective is not to replace design authorship.

It is to help take an idea further towards physical reality.

  • Materials + Details

    Understanding how things meet.

    Materials do not exist independently.

Timber meets stone. Metal meets joinery. Lighting becomes integrated. Hardware disappears into details. Finishes, edges, junctions and tolerances determine how an idea ultimately feels when it becomes physical.

Design Lab investigates these relationships through material exploration, detailing, samples and technical development.

The objective is to understand not only how something should look, but how it can actually be made.

  • Prototyping

    Testing before assuming.

Some questions are better answered physically.

Samples, mock-ups and prototypes allow materials, details, interfaces and manufacturing methods to be tested before they become embedded in a completed project.

    Prototyping turns uncertainty into evidence.

It allows an idea to be examined, changed, validated or abandoned before greater complexity is committed around it.

  • Product + System Development

From resolved idea to reusable capability.

Some investigations have value beyond the project that created them.

A resolved detail may become a reusable component. A recurring architectural problem may become a configurable System. A collaboration may develop into a product or collection.

Design Lab provides the development environment in which those possibilities can be explored, tested and resolved.

Where an idea proves valuable and repeatable, it can move from investigation into Superfluoro Systems.

  • What comes next

Design Lab exists because the answer is not always known at the beginning.

It gives Superfluoro a place to explore uncertainty deliberately, test ideas against physical reality and retain what the work teaches us.

    Explore. Test. Resolve.
